An exhaust emission control system for an IC engine, especially for engines with even numbers of cylinders, has the exhaust from each half of the engine passed through three way catalysers (8, 9) in separate exhaust ducts (6, 7) fitted with lambda sensors (15 to 18). The combined flows are passed over the main catalyser (10) where sulphur is collected as well as nitrous oxides. The sulphur is removed by a heating process with the fuel mixture in one half of the engine rich and in the other half lean, to produce different stochiometric gas flows. The system provides heating effects in the catalyser to replace the sulphur without thermal damage to the catalyser and without undue emissions of hydrogen sulphide or ammonia. |
