PURPOSE: A composition containing Liriopis Tuber extract is provided to treat irritable bowel syndrome and to use for pharmaceutical composition and health food. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating irritable bowel syndrome contains Liriopis Tuber extract as an active ingredient. The Liriopis Tuber is a root of Ophiopogon japonicus Ker-Gawler or Liriope platyphylla Wang et Tang. The extract is isolated using water, low alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms, non-polar solvent or mixture solvent. The non-polar solvent is dichloromethane, chloroform, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, hexane or supercritical fluid. The composition is formulated in oral or parenteral use.
