PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and a method for controlling the imaging apparatus, which can shorten photographing sequence when switching a length and breadth position or switching an aspect ratio. SOLUTION: This imaging apparatus includes: an imaging element 221 for outputting a subject image as image data; an imaging area control section for controlling the length and breadth or aspect ratio in an image data output area of the imaging element 221; a mirror driving mechanism 239 for driving a movable mirror 201 so as to guide a beam from a subject to the imaging element 221 or guide it to a finder; and a shutter driving mechanism 237 for driving a shutter 213 so as to set the beam from the subject to an exposure state to the imaging element 221 or to a shading state from the imaging element 221. The imaging apparatus controls driving timing of the shutter driving mechanism 237 in accordance with the image data output area and a state of the movable mirror 201, and further controls driving timing of the mirror driving mechanism 239 in accordance with the image data output area and a state of the shutter 213.
