PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ethanol in improved ethanol production efficiency and yield by using a cellulosic substrate as a raw material, wherein the substrate is e.g. cellobiose, cellotriose and cellotetraose which are partial decomposition products of cellulose prepared by using basidiomycete. SOLUTION: Flammulina velutipes is used as the basidiomycete to produce ethanol from cellulose, cellooligosaccharide, etc., having a crystal structure destructed to enable easy decomposition with an enzyme for producing ethanol by fermenting the cellulosic substrate with basidiomycete.
