PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine the oxygen storage capacity of a cleaning catalyst which cleans the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.

SOLUTION: The calculation of oxygen storage amount is prohibited by setting a value 1 on an oxygen storage amount calculation prohibiting flag Fcmax in a case that a catalyst estimated temperature variation ΔTest, i.e., a time variation of a catalyst estimated temperature Test, is less than a threshold level Tref, an intake air volume Qa is the same or above a threshold level Qref1, and an intake air volume variation ΔQa is the same or above a threshold level Qref2 (S360-S390). Miscalculation of oxygen storage amount of the cleaning catalyst by the exhaust gas blowing through the cleaning catalyst in case the intake air volume Qa increases rapidly can be controlled. Then, the prohibition of the calculation of oxygen storage amount is released when a release index value Gsm becomes less than a threshold level Gref and a release index value variation ΔGsm becomes a negative value (S420-S440).
