PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve quality in a workpiece by preventing lower thread from being sewn into the workpiece. SOLUTION: A thread cutting device 100 for a sewing machine includes: a fixed cutter 4 which is fixed in the lower part of a needle plate 1 with the workpiece C placed thereon and where a thread cutting part is constituted of a heat generation body for generating heat by energization; and a movable cutter mechanism 5 which is arranged in the lower part of the fixed cutter, has a movable cutter 51 for capturing upper thread T1 and the lower thread T2 between the needle plate and a hook, and guides the upper thread and lower thread to the fixed cutter with the use of the movable cutter. The upper thread and lower thread captured by the movable cutter are guided to the fixed cutter so as to be cut. The thread cutting device includes a lower thread sweeping mechanism 6 for capturing the lower thread in the middle part of the hook and the needle hole of the needle plate, which is pulled-up to the lower surface of the workpiece when the end of the lower thread is put through the needle hole of the needle plate in response to the rise of the upper thread after welding the upper thread continuing to a sewing needle and the lower thread continuing to a bobbin, which are cut by the heat of the heat generation body, and then, sweeping the lower thread to be pulled back to the lower part of the needle plate.
