PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system having excellent imaging performance, to provide an optical device including the variable power optical system, and to provide a method for manufacturing the variable power optical system. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system ZL mounted on a digital single-lens reflex camera 1 etc., includes in the starting order from the object side: a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power; a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power; and a rear group GR having positive refractive power. The second lens group G2 includes at least one or more positive lenses, and a negative lens disposed adjacent to the object side of the positive lens having the largest refractive power among the positive lenses; and in the second lens group G2, the lens surface disposed closest to the image side is aspherical, upon zooming from a wide-angle end state to a telephoto end state, the distance between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 is varied, and the distance between the second lens group G2 and the rear group GR is varied.
