PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the troublesome recovery of reading operation which is needed when conveyance is suspended by normally conveying a document even if the skewed amount thereof cannot be accurately detected due to the displacement of the document to be conveyed in the main scanning direction. SOLUTION: When only one of a plurality of skew detection sensors can detect the document, the maximum skew amount estimated is recognized as a skew amount. Therefore, the reading can be performed without stopping the document.
