<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader (image forming apparatus) capable of downsizing the height dimension of the image reader. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Between hinges 203A and 203B and the first read window 202A of an original platen 201, a housing 203F which is recessed to the lower side from the upper end face position of the original platen 201 and houses a gear unit when an original cover 203 is at a closed position is provided. Also, an elastically deformable regulating member 210 configuring a wall portion 211 for regulating the movement of an original document mounted on the first read window 202A to the side of the housing 203F by being projected to the upper side when the original cover 203 is at an open position is provided.
