<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a route switching method which is short in route switching time in case of trouble occurrence and compatible with RSTP. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A layer-2 switch including a holding unit which holds internal information including Root ID and ROOT Path Cost of a ring network maintains the Root ID in the holding unit as Root ID before trouble detection and changes the Root Path Cost in the holding unit to a maximum when detecting trouble at a ring port, sets the port role of the ring port where the trouble is detected to Disabled Port and a port state to Discarding and also sets the port role of the other ring port to Root Port and its port state to Forwarding, and then transmits RSTP BPDU having a maximum value set to Priority value of the Root ID from the ring port which newly becomes the Root port.
