<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-board device capable of automatically and properly canceling illumination while avoiding increase of a number of parts, and an on-board device controlling method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This on-board device 10 comprises a display control part 21A mounted to a vehicle with an on-board camera 11, and switching from a high luminance display for a non-dark place to a low luminance display for a dark place when an illumination signals SB is inputted from the vehicle. The device is provided with an car outside environment determination part 55 for determining whether the outside of the car is bright or not based on video signals of the on-board camera 11, so that the display control part 21A switches to the high luminance display for the non-dark place even if the illumination signal SB is inputted when it is determined that the outside of the vehicle is bright.
