PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device for securing the stability of an engine and actualizing the early activation of a catalyst by controlling ignition timing to be properly retarded. SOLUTION: The engine control device sets an initial value for an ignition timing retarding amount and estimates the temperature of the catalyst for checking that the estimated temperature is higher than a set temperature or not (S3). The bearing force of the engine from parameters including an air amount is checked when the estimated temperature is not higher than a set temperature and first canceling conditions are not established, and an increment for the initial value is determined in accordance with a difference between a current air amount and a set air amount to increase the ignition timing retarding amount when it is determined that the bearing force of the engine exists (S7). Then, the ignition timing is reset to be advanced gradually in set values when an engine revolution can be kept at an allowable level, and all the ignition timing retardation are stopped when the engine revolution cannot be kept at the allowable level. Thus, the ignition timing can be controlled to be properly retarded to secure the stability of the engine, and the early activation of the catalyst can be activated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
