<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and highly efficient lighting device which enables high-quality image read by suppressing density unevenness caused by bright point reflection even in the presence of specular-reflected light flux when a document is not planar, and to provide an image read device using it. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A lighting device LB for illuminating image information forms image information arranged in an irradiation surface on a line sensor via a read optical system and is used for an image read device for obtaining image information. The lighting device has: a light source means 106 having a plurality of light emitting elements arranged in a main scanning direction; a reflection means which is arranged between the light source means and an irradiation surface and reflects a part of light flux projected from a light source means except light flux directly lighting image information to a light source means side; and a retroreflection means 107 which is arranged in a plane including a clearance between a plurality of light emitting elements at a side where a plurality of light emitting element are arranged, and reflects light flux reflected by a reflection means 104 to an irradiation surface side.
