The device has light sources (10, 15) i.e. LEDs, light mixing rods (11, 16), and polarizers (12, 17) for producing respective light beams in different colors with polarizations that are different from each other. A micro-mirror assembly (23) spatially modulates the light beams. A birefringent crystal (26) i.e. quartz crystal, locally displaces the light beams relative to each other depending on the polarizations. A controller (30) alternately activates the light sources, rods, polarizers and the assembly depending on image data. An independent claim is also included for a method for rendering an image.
