<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly recognize a static object in an image captured by a camera mounted on a running vehicle. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image recognition method includes: a step (S5002) for recognizing the position of a road on image data according to the image data created when a camera images the outside of a vehicle; a step (S5009) for comparing the recognized position of the road with the position of the road on map data obtained by seeing the vehicle from a predetermined point of view, the map data being stored in a navigation device for specifying the position of the vehicle, to calculate an amount of distortion between the image data and the map data; steps (S5011, S5012) for converting, based on the amount of distortion, either the image data or the map data into data as seen from the point of view of the other data; and a static object recognition step (S5014) for recognizing a static object by determining whether or not the static object exists in the same positions in the image data and the map data.
