<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which dihydroxyphthalic acids can be produced in a comparatively short reaction time under mild reaction pressure especially not too high. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the dihydroxyphthalic acids includes dicarboxylating a dihydric phenol by bringing the dihydric phenol into contact with carbon dioxide in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate and/or an alkali metal bicarbonate and a lithium compound.
