PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field emission device including a carbon nanotube mat subjected to laser or plasma treatment.

SOLUTION: The field emission device includes a cathode and an anode. The cathode includes a carbon nanotube mat obtained from a filter cake formed by filtering a plurality of nanotubes from a suspension liquid. The mat can include an upper surface and a lower surface on the opposite side. The lower surface corresponds to a filter cake surface arranged adjacent to a filter while the mat is formed. The upper surface may work as an emission surface of the cathode.
