PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector satisfactorily adaptable to a plurality of installation methods. SOLUTION: The projector includes: a light source device 3 which emits light having asymmetric intensity distribution around an optical axis; a symmetrization optical system 21 which enhances symmetry of the intensity distribution of the light emitted from the light source device 3; an image forming apparatus which forms an image with the light emitted from the symmetrization optical system 21; a projection optical system which projects the image formed by the image forming apparatus; a cooling device 27 which cools the light source device 3; a holding part 20 which holds the mutual relative positions of the light source device 3, the symmetrization optical system 21, and the cooling device 27; and a housing part in which the holding part 20 is housed.
