PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame detector capable of improving the precision of flame detection by reducing an invalid detection area while expanding substantial effective detection area, further capable of grasping roughly the position of the flame generated in the detection area, and its detection sensitivity setting method. SOLUTION: The flame detector comprises: a sensor SEN which is provided with a light reception element 10; a filter part FLT which makes pass only specific signal component Ap from the detection signal Sp of the sensor part SEN; an amplification part AMP which amplifies signal component Ap by predetermined amplification factor by which variable setup is carried out; an A/D converter 50 converting amplified output signal Bp of the amplifier part into digital signal; a saturation detection part 61 for detecting the saturation state of the A/D converted amplified output signal Bp; a sensitivity switching control part 62 for switching into optimum detection sensitivity and setting to the same; and a signal process part PRO provided with flame determination part 63 for performing flame determination process based on the amplified output signal Bp at the optimum detection sensitivity.
