<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which an installation area is suppressed as a whole by making it possible to lay out a fixing unit above a transfer belt. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the transfer belt 40 on which a developed toner image is carried; a secondary transfer roller 61 which transfers the toner image carried on the transfer belt 40 to transfer material; a transfer material gripping mechanism 610 which grips the transfer material before the transfer material is inserted through space between the transfer belt 40 and the secondary transfer roller 61, and also releases the gripped transfer material after the transfer material is inserted through the space between the transfer belt 40 and the secondary transfer roller 61; a transfer material gripping mechanism controller which changes timing that the transfer material is released by the transfer material gripping mechanism 610; and a first suction device 210 which sucks the transfer material released by the transfer material gripping mechanism 610.
