The piston (1) has an upper part (2), a piston head (3) and a ring box (4) for receiving piston rings (5a-5c). The rings are supported on a cylinder wall (14). A piston shaft (7) is provided adjacent to the upper part. Hub boreholes (8) are provided in the piston shaft for receiving a piston bolt (9). A sealing element (15) i.e. rod seal, is fixed in the wall in a preset position. The sealing element is sealably supported at a friction-optimized shaft surface (18) and is made of carbon fibers, glass fibers or PTFE. The shaft surface is provided with an iron coating or anodic oxidation coating. An independent claim is also included for a method for sealing an annular gap between a cylinder wall and a shaft surface of a piston.
