PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical or food composition for preventing and treating obesity containing piperine is provided to reduce body weight and to prevent and treat obesity. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating obesity contains piperine of chemical formula 1 or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The piperine is isolated from Piper longum, Piper nigrum, Cubeb(Piper cubebe), or Dill(Anethum graveolens). The piperine is isolated from plants using alcohol of 1-6 carbon atoms, acetone, choloform, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride, hexane, cyclo hexane, petroleum ether, or benzene.
