745,398. Opening fibrous material ; lapforming. FLEISSNER, H., FLEISSNER, H., and FLEISSNER, G., [trading as FLEISSNER & SOHN, MASCHINENFABRIK.]. June 4, 1953 [Jan. 17, 1953], No. 15430/53. Class 120 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A machine for opening and drying loose fibrous material and forming a fleece therefrom comprises a drying chamber containing a picking machine 2, 3, rotary suction cages 5, 6 on to which opened material is conveyed in a stream of heated air to form a fleece, and a fan 7 and heating units 10 for extracting air from the cages and re-circulating it through the picking machine and cages. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, air extracted from cages 5, 6 is returned in part through a conduit 12 to the back of cages 5, 6 and in part through a conduit 13, past heaters 10, and through channels 11, 4 past the beater or picker drum 3 to convey opened wet fibrous material to the front of cages 5, 6. Heaters 16, 17, 18, 19, in the form of pipes, electrical heating units or infra-red lamps, heat cages 5, 6; this heat, together with that of the conveying air, has a drying effect on the wet material and prevents it adhering to the cages. The air delivered under pressure through conduit 12 acts to retain the fleece of fibrous material on the back of cage 5, whence it passes around a succession of suction-type drying drums 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the fleece is collected on a foraminous conveyer belt 21 passing around cage 6 and no conduit such as 12 is necessary.
