Punching ; riveting ; blanks transferring.- Work - transfer mechanism comprises a member 2, Fig. 2A, movable between successive work stations and having mounted thereon a work-holding device 11 which has opposite abutment bars 28, 29 with opposed recesses 30, 31 having inclined end portions, for receiving opposite portions of the work, one of said bars having spring-urged pins 32 projecting from the inclined end portions and converging towards each other. The transfer mechanism is used for transferring vehicle wheel body and rim assemblies from one work station to another and comprises a horizontal frame 2 slidably mounted on stationary supports 4 and having parallel side bars 8 and an end bar 9. Three work stations are disposed at equal distances apart and the frame is reciprocated through the distance between adjacent stations by a compressed air motor comprising a cylinder 36 through which extends a piston-rod 37 each end of which is connected to the frame through brackets 38. A wheel assembly is first loaded on a device 10 having transversely adjustable abutment bars 14, 15, secured to the bars 8, which engage the wheel rim, upstanding pins 16 which engage opposite sides of a spoke and an upstanding pin 17 which engages the tyre valve hole in the rim. The pins 16, 17 are each adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the frame. The frame is then moved to the left to position the assembly at the first work station which consists of an assembling and piercing machine of the kind described in Specification 673,179. This machine raises the assembly from the frame and the latter then returns to its original position where a further assembly is loaded on the device 10. When the first operation is completed the assembly is lowered on to the frame and is located by the device 11 consisting of a pair of transversely adjustable bars 28, 29 secured to the bars 8. The frame is again moved to the left to position the assembly at the second work station which consists of a rivet-inserting machine of the kind described in Specification 740,741. The process of raising the assembly and returning the frame is repeated and when this second operation is completed the assembly is lowered on to the frame and is located in a device 12, Fig. 2B (not shown) similar to device 11. The feed mechanism is again moved to the left to position the assembly at the third work station which consists of a rivet heading machine similar in construction to the piercing machine. When this operation is completed ejectors 13, Fig. 2C, slide the assembly along the stationary supports 4 and on to a conveyer. The stroke of the frame is limited by adjustable stop-pins 39.
