[Also in Group XX] In a guided missile, the target is viewed by a television camera and the television picture is transmitted from the missile to a control station. At the control station, the television signals indicate the movement of the missile relative to the target and guidance signals are transmitted to the missile to maintain it on the required track. Movements of the missile in pitch and yaw tend to cause the target to move away from the camera and this is counteracted by corrective signals derived from the missile gyroscopic stabilizing system. The corrections are applied to either optical or electronic devices which stabilize the target image at the camera. In the electronic embodiment, the television pick-up tube forms an electron image before projection on to the storage electrode and control is exercised by coils, disposed round the tube, which are energized in accordance with movements of the gyroscope system and which move the electron image. |
