<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption of a packet forwarding device that supports a redundancy protocol such as VRRP and performs stand-by system operation (backup operation). <P>SOLUTION: A router 12 is able to form a VRRP group together with a router 11 and performs switching between master operation and backup operation complimentarily with the router 11. Further, the router 12 can perform mode switching between a normal mode for monitoring a control packet (VRRP advertisement) transmitted regarding the VRRP group from the router 11 performing master operation during the backup operation and a power saving mode which does not monitor the VRRP advertisement. A switch 13 monitors the VRRP advertisement in place of the router 12 when the router 12 is in the power saving mode and controls the switching of the router 12 between the normal mode and the power saving mode on the basis of the monitored result of the VRRP advertisement. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p>
