Power consumption is reduced. A wireless communication system (1) is provided with a wireless base station (10), a mobile station (30) which performs communication with the wireless base station (10), and a relay station (20) which performs relay communication between the wireless base station (10) and the mobile station (30). When a power supply control section (2b) in the relay station (20) detects that the number of the mobile stations (30) having communication with the wireless base station (10) is a prescribed number or less, the power control section performs power control by at least turning off power supplies relating to the relay communication or performing an intermittent operation or performing power-saving operation.
