PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an answering machine apparatus adapted to the case that a return call to a caller cannot be made like the case that a phone number of the caller whose item has been recorded is unknown or missed, and notifying a return message to a counterpart by reducing the terminal operation of a recipient as much as possible. SOLUTION: In the answering machine apparatus 3 for recording an item message of the caller, after reading the recorded item message, return messages input or selected by the recipient are recorded in return message storage means 311, 312; a call is transmitted to a phone number extracted by a caller number extraction means 304 by a message return means 313; and, after the counterpart responds, the messages stored in the return message storage means 311, 312 are notified to the counterpart.
