<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly prevent, by a simple configuration, charging failure on the surface of an image carrier, such as nonuniform charging, which is caused by adhesion of residual matter remaining on the surface of the image carrier to the surface of a cylindrical charging member when the surface of the image carrier is charged by a contact type charging device using the cylindrical charging member that rotates in contact with the surface of the image carrier. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is disclosed in which the surface of the image carrier is charged by the contact type charging device 120 using the cylindrical charging member 122 that rotates in contact with the surface of the rotationally driven image carrier 10. In the image forming apparatus, the cylindrical charging member is movable between a position where the cylindrical charging member comes in contact with a charging bias supply member 121 that applies a charging bias voltage and a surface of the image carrier to thereby charge the surface of the image carrier and a position where the cylindrical charging member is in contact with a cleaning member 124 that cleans the surface of the cylindrical charging member.
