A method of functionalizing nano-carbon materials with a diameter less than 1μm, comprising: contacting the nano-carbon materials with a free radical generating compound such as azo-compound in an organic solvent under an inert gas atmosphere, thereby obtaining nano-carbon materials with functional groups thereon. The physical and chemical properties of the nano-carbon materials can be modified through the aforementioned method.
