Disclosed is an a-sialon phosphor which is characterized by being represented by the following general formula: (M)x(Eu)y(Si,Al)12(O,N)16 [wherein M represents at least one element selected from a group consisting of Li, Mg, Ca, Y and lanthanide elements excluding La and Ce and comprising at least Ca], wherein the oxygen content is 1.2 mass% or less and primary particles constituting the a-sialon form a cylindrical structure. When an ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of 250 to 500 nm or visible light is used as an excitation source, the a-sialon phosphor exhibits such a fluorescent property that a peak appears at a wavelength ranging from 595 to 630 nm.
