<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device capable of suppressing color breakup due to color sequential driving and capable of achieving good coloring and gray scale characteristics. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electro-optical device displays a full-color image by a color sequential driving system and switching light source colors emitted from three light sources with time. A liquid crystal driving means divides one field into a plurality of sub-fields along a time axis, and in each sub-field, applies an on-voltage or an off-voltage according to a grayscale level to each pixel constituting a liquid crystal display unit. A light source control means switches the light source colors in at least two colors of the three light source colors in such a manner that the switching period of the light source colors is shorter than the period when the liquid crystal in the pixel constitutes the grayscale. The electro-optical device can suppress color breakup due to color sequential driving and achieves good coloring and grayscale characteristics without degrading brightness.
