PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an energy absorbing member made of an aluminum alloy extruded material having a cruciform inner wall connected to a substantially rectangular outer peripheral wall and two pairs of opposite sides of the outer peripheral wall respectively, so as to absorb a high energy amount while being lightweight. SOLUTION: In the energy absorbing member, recesses portions 5, 8 are so formed in outer sides 1, 2 forming an outer peripheral wall that folding parts 6, 9 are obtuse angles. When the energy absorbing member is compressed to deform in the axial direction, a corner of the outer peripheral wall and connected portions 7, 11 of the outer peripheral wall and the inner wall form a node of buckling deformation. Crooked sides (a side 1a and a side 5a) containing the folding portion 6, and crooked portions (a side 2a and a side 8a) containing the folding portion 9 form a loop of buckling deformation to be deformed in the same direction as that of the inside or the outside of a cross section.
