<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, even if a printing speed is increased using the same main scanning to form images on a preceding sheet and the following sheet, there is no means to cope with the situation where a receiving timing of a following print job is delayed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the following job is received, during printing according to the preceding job, the remaining time of the image formation on the preceding sheet and the time required for supplying the following sheet are calculated. A sheet presence/absence sensor 41 or a sheet sensor 42 for detecting the sheet tip determines whether the rear end of the preceding sheet is positioned further than an interval between sheets with regard to the tip of the following sheets 12, 52, 62 loaded on a sheet feeding tray 11, an extension cassette 50 and a manual insertion multi-tray 60, from the timing detecting the tip of the preceding sheet, namely whether an image can be formed or not on the rear end of the preceding sheet and on the tip of the following sheet through the same main scanning even through the intermittent feeding. When the image formation is determined possible by the intermittent feeding, the sheets 12, 52 or 62 are intermittently fed from the sheet feeding tray 11, extension cassette 50 or manual insertion multi-tray 60 through transfer routes 74, 76, 77.
