The invention provides an apparatus for the synthesis of ammonia from a synthesis gas containing N2 and H2, comprising at least one first reactor (1). The apparatus comprises a first non-cooled catalyst bed unit (2), at least one heat exchanger apparatus (3, 31), and at least two cooled catalyst bed units (4, 41, 42). Each cooled catalyst bed unit (4, 41, 42) is equipped with a plurality of cooling pipes (5). The apparatus further comprises a circuit line (6) having at least one feed apparatus (61) and at least one outlet apparatus (62), wherein the circuit line (6), starting from the feed apparatus (61), comprises in consecutive downstream arrangement the plurality of cooling pipes (5), the first non-cooled catalyst bed unit (2), the at least one heat exchanger apparatus (3, 31), and the at least two cooled catalyst bed units (4, 41, 42) up to the outlet apparatus (62). To this end, the circuit line (6) comprises at least one bypass line (7), which is arranged between the feed apparatus (61) and the first non-cooled catalyst bed unit (2) in parallel to the plurality of cooling pipes (5) running through the at least two cooled catalyst bed units (4, 41, 42).
