PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mat material which can maintain a relatively good holding power even after receiving repeated loads of compression/restoration.

SOLUTION: The present invention provides a mat material containing a plurality of inorganic fibers, wherein at least a part of the inorganic fibers have a core part and a surface layer surrounding the core part, with the surface layer containing more silica (SiO2) than the core part.
