PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a balance weight device for an elevator capable of previously preventing collision of a derailed balance weight and a car or the like by stabilizing attitude of the derailed balance weight at generation of an earthquake or the like. SOLUTION: The balance weight device for the elevator is provided with: the balance weight 3 liftably arranged in a hoistway of the elevator and having a through-hole 10 bored so as to be vertically penetrated; and a steel wire 12 provided with tensioning over a whole range of a lifting range of the balance weight along a lifting route of the balance weight at predetermined tension and penetrated through the through-hole of the balance weight.
