The method involves manipulating datasets by a testing device (1) that is connected with a transmission path (6) between two Ethernet devices (4, 5) communicating with each other. A change of transmission functions of the transmission path is simulated by the manipulation, and the datasets are exchanged between the Ethernet devices. An individual information carrier of the datasets is directly manipulated, and bit errors and burst errors are simulated. The data exchange and the manipulation of the datasets take place in a completely duplex process. An independent claim is also included for a testing device comprising an electronic circuit for manipulating datasets.
