PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for saccharifying bark by which the yield of saccharides is improved, and saccharification can also more simply be carried out with lower energy. SOLUTION: The method for saccharifying the bark of an arboreous plant includes: an alkali treatment step of dipping the bark of the arboreous plant in an aqueous solution of an alkaline compound; and an enzymatic saccharification treatment step of carrying out a saccharification treatment of the alkali-treated bark from the alkali treatment step with an enzyme; and using pectinase and cellulase as the enzyme in the enzymatic saccharification treatment step. In the method for saccharifying the arboreous plant, the cellulase is one or more selected from the group consisting of endoglucanase, exoglucanase, and β-glucosidase. Furthermore, in the method for saccharifying the arboreous plant, the pectinase is one or more selected from the group consisting of pectinesterase, pectin lyase, pectic lyase, exopolygalacturonase, endopolygalacturonase, and rhamnogalacturonase.
