PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a precursor fiber, by which a carbon fiber having a high tensile strength and a high tensile elastic modulus can be produced. SOLUTION: This method for producing the precursor fiber for the carbon fiber includes: (1) a process for preparing an aqueous solution of carboxymethylcellulose; (2) a process for adding carbon nanotubes to the aqueous solution of the carboxymethylcellulose, irradiating the mixture with ultrasonic waves to disperse the carbon nanotubes, and preparing the dispersion of the carbon nanotubes; (3) a process for preparing a spinning dope comprising the carbon nanotube dispersion, a polyacrylonitrile-based polymer and a rhodan salt; (4) a process for obtaining a coagulated fiber from the spinning dope by a wet or dry-wet type spinning method; and (5) a process for drawing the coagulated fiber to obtain the precursor fiber of the carbon fiber.
