PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical alignment type thin film transistor array substrate whose numerical aperture is not reduced.

SOLUTION: The thin film transistor array substrate includes: an etching stop layer formed on an insulating layer; a passivation layer formed on the insulating layer including the etching stop layer; recessed portions formed on the passivation layer, and communicating with the etching stop layer; and pixel electrodes formed on the passivation layer including the recessed portions, and recessed in accordance with the recessed portions. The etching stop layer includes a transparent semiconductor.
