<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flow velocity measuring method measuring a flow velocity of a colored fluid. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The flow velocity measuring method includes the steps of: delivering slit-like X rays 11b to a quenching oil 1 containing microparticles 14 beforehand; allowing transmission through the quenching oil 1; detecting, from among scattered X rays 11c which are the slit-like X rays 11b bounced off the microparticles 14, an energy value of the scattered X rays 11c incident on a detection surface 15c facing a transmissive surface 1a through which the slit-like X rays 11b permeates the quenching oil 1, and an incident position on the detection surface 15c; selecting, from among the scattered X rays 11c incident on the detection surface 15c, right-angled scattered X rays 11c' having a scattering angle of 90° on the basis of the energy value of the detected scattered X rays 11c and a Compton scattering formula; and calculating the flow velocity of the quenching oil 1 in the transmissive surface 1a on the basis of an amount of change of an incident position of the right-angled scattered X rays 11c' on the detection surface 15c.
