Disclosed is an instrument (1) for examining bacteria in the oral cavity equipped with an examination part (10) which comprises a board (11) and a water-absorbing carrier (12) incorporated in the board (11), wherein the water-absorbing carrier (12) holds a color-developing enzyme substrate, which develops a color due to a characteristic enzymatic activity of the bacteria in the oral cavity, and a characteristic enzyme of the bacteria in the oral cavity, and the board (11) has been colored in a definite color that is developed by the color-developing enzyme substrate depending on the bacterial count in the oral cavity.  Also disclosed is a method for examining bacteria in the oral cavity whereby the bacterial count in the oral cavity is determined by using the instrument (1) for examining bacteria in the oral cavity.
