PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a monosulfonate useful as a raw material for medicines, agrichemicals, liquid crystals and polymers. SOLUTION: This method for producing the monosulfonate represented by general formula (II) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is aryl which may have one or more substituents; R<SP>2</SP>is alkyl or aryl which may have one or more substituents) comprises reacting a 1,2-ethanediol derivative represented by general formula (I): R<SP>1</SP>-CH(OH)-CH<SB>2</SB>OH with a sulfonic halide represented by general formula: R<SP>2</SP>SO<SB>2</SB>X (wherein, X is a halogen atom) in the presence of a base and a tin compound in a hydrocarbon-based solvent.
