PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus and a projection image display apparatus which are capable of suppressing both of "flickering" and "color smear". SOLUTION: The projection image display apparatus 100 includes a back light preprocessing unit 220, a light source controller 230, and an element controller 240. The light source controller 230 controls an amount of light to be emitted from a white light source 10, based on a target light amount L<SB>T</SB>and a time constant τ. The light source controller 230 separately controls signal values of image input signals of a plurality of colors. The back light preprocessing unit 220 calculates a target light amount L<SB>T</SB>based on the signal values of the image input signals of the plurality of colors. The back light preprocessing unit 220 calculates saturation based on the signal values of the image input signals of the plurality of colors, and sets a larger value for the time constant τ as the saturation becomes higher.
