<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress vibration caused by a reciprocating inertial force along with the rotation of a crankshaft 5, in an internal combustion engine having four cylinders 1, 2, 3 and 4. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine, two balance shafts 23, 24 respectively having eccentric balance weights 23a, 24a, and an intermediate shaft 25 are journaled, both of the balance shafts are rotated in opposite directions at the same revolution number by gears 26, 27 disposed therebetween, while the intermediate shaft is rotated at the revolution number as twice as large as that of the crankshaft by gears 28, 29 disposed between the intermediate shaft and the crankshaft. One balance shaft 23 of either of the balance shafts is rotated to be unequal in speed at the same revolution number as that of the intermediate shaft by unequal speed gears 30, 31 disposed between the balance shaft 23 and the intermediate shaft.
