<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a display effect for securing safety of work, while properly setting brightness of a monitor screen depending on peripheral light and shade. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This display unit, which displays an image from a rear camera 2 and operating conditions of machinery on a monitor 1, changes the brightness of the monitor screen depending on the light and shade on the periphery of the machinery. At night, when operations for backward motion and swing to be monitored by the rear camera 2 are performed and when an abnormality occurs in the operating conditions of the machinery, the monitor screen becomes brighter than in the absence of the operations and that of the abnormality, on the basis of signals from an operation detecting means 7 and an abnormality determining means 8.
