<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stapler as a single device capable of binding a bundle of paper-sheet-like elements different in thickness. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The stapler includes a clincher table 1, a slider table 2 pivotally mounted thereon, and an operation handle 4 pivotably mounted so as to rotate on a relevant pivot mount portion. On the slider table 2, a magazine set 31 is provided, comprising a plurality of magazines storing staples different in leg length according to different thicknesses of paper-sheet-like elements. The magazine set 31 is arranged to be slidable on the slider table 2 in a direction perpendicular to the operation handle 4. The magazine set 31 slides automatically or manually as the operation handle 4 is pressed down. For the timing and width for sliding the magazine set 31, the thickness of paper-sheet-like elements to be bound is detected by a slide control section provided on the stapler to control the amount of sliding. Pressing down the operation handle 4 further after selecting an appropriate magazine pushes out a staple, so that the paper sheets are bound with the appropriate staple.
