PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid comprises the following processes: (1) a process for reacting a dilower alkyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate with a basic alkali metal compound in an aqueous medium of 4 to 7 times weight based on the dilower alkyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate to obtain the dialkali metal 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate solution; (2) a process for diluting the dialkali metal 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate solution obtained in the process (1) with an aqueous medium so that the amount of the aqueous medium is 7.1 to 20 times weight the charged amount of the dilower alkyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate; and (3) a process for acid-depositing the dialkali metal 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate solution diluted in the process (2) and then separating and recovering the deposited 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid.
