PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which does not require a complicated index when performing a switchover of a height and width and an aspect ratio, and to provide a control method of the imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has an imaging element 221 outputting a subject image as image data, and a visual line detection circuit 210 detecting a visual line of a person observing the subject image through a finder. Visual line ranges 501a, 501b, 503a and 503b are provided around a finder eyesight, and when the visual line detection circuit 210 detects a visual line in the visual line range, a height and width and/or aspect ratio of an image data output range is controlled.
